Lately a lot of people have come down hard on sugar and carbs for causing diabetes and suggesting that you should eat more red meat instead. But in a meta analysis, looking at sugar consumption and diabetes, researchers admitted that “evidence linking sugar directly to diabetes is lacking”. They did suggest that eating too much sugar can contribute to obesity which itself is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes. In another study of 12,800 adults, researchers found that just a 0.8% higher risk of diabetes is connected to sugar intake if weight gain is factored out. More recently research says that there’s something worse for diabetes than sugar. In a 2023 study of over 200,00 people, researchers found that high consumption of red meat was associated with a 50% higher risk of diabetes. Now be aware that I’m not suggesting that sugar is fine for diabetes, but I am pointing out that to control diabetes, this research suggests that we should be eating less meat not more.
