What’s worse than sugar for diabetes? You might be surprised by the answer. In a meta analysis looking at different food groups and their correlation to diabetes risk, researchers found that whole grains were associated with the lowest risk of diabetes, even more so than vegetables. In contrast, red meat and sugared beverages were both equally correlated with the increased risk of diabetes. But when researchers analyzed the effect of two servings of these foods per day, red meat was slightly worse than sugared beverages in its correlation to more diabetes risk. In a more recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, participants eating the most red meat were 62% more likely to develop diabetes than those who ate the least. In still another study looking at sugar intake, there was virtually no correlation of sugar intake to diabetes except through the increase in obesity. So, if you’re looking to reduce your risk of diabetes, consider eating more whole grains and vegetables and less red meat and sugar drinks.
