What high protein food raises insulin more than pasta? The answer may be a key to controlling blood sugar. Let me explain why some high protein foods raise insulin more than some high carb foods. Most people know that insulin is necessary for blood sugar control. Most people don’t know that insulin stimulates body fat production and high insulin levels are at the core of serious health problems such as obesity, diabetes, high triglycerides, and high blood pressure. Most people know that carbs raise blood sugar and insulin levels, but few people know that protein also raises insulin levels, even if proteins don’t raise blood sugar. For example, beef has an insulin index score of 51 compared to pasta which has an insulin index score of 40. This is because beef is rich in protein which stimulates insulin release just as carbs do. This is why it’s better to control blood sugar by eating more fiber, which helps to reduce insulin levels, and by eating more protein, which could increase insulin levels.
