A startling fact about Alzheimer’s was revealed by Dr. Rudolf Tanji, Chair of the Alzheimer’s research group at Harvard. He points out that some animals always get Alzheimer’s pathology in their brain and others never do depending on what they eat. He explains that all meat-eating animals get Alzheimer’s pathology in their brain if they live long enough, while herbivores, plant-eaters, never do. While this observation is about animals, recent human studies support this view that avoiding meat and following a plant-based diet can aid in preventing Alzheimer’s disease. One 15-year long study published in 2022 revealed that vegetarians had a 33% lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s, compared to meat-eaters. Another study published in 2024 revealed that there’s a 14% increase in risk of Alzheimer’s and people who ate an average of one ounce of processed meat per day. The study also showed that there was a 20% reduction in risk if the ounce of meat was replaced by beans and nuts. So to start preserving your brain function, consider eating less meat and more plant-based foods.
